To work in an office we require a few things to support productivity - a chair, a table surface and light. The catalyst for the project began through discussions about how we work and the flexibility required within the modern office environment.
The challenge we set ourselves was to create harmony between two necessary elements – a working surface and lighting solution. Lightness and flexibility became the creative filters for our thinking.
Power and data cables are managed through a slot running the length of the surface. A removable plug-in cap either side of the table surface allows plugs and large transformers to be slotted through the table.
We decided to mount the light armature to the ceiling to clear the table surface. Mounted on a sliding power-track the lighting armature can be freely moved and rotated as the office environment adapts. The armature is designed to deliver ‘task’ as well as ‘ambient’ room lighting.
The thin alloy table and lighting frame is contrasted with the visually soft table surface. Made from steam-bent plywood the material wraps the frame increasing the rigidity as well as softening the identity. We selected plywood for its warm, tactile and natural qualities.
The light quality is adjusted through a plug-in remote control.
The lip profile prevents paper and pens falling through the cable slot.
GRO is interested to develop this project with production partners.
