product design that builds sustainable business value
The design solution significantly reduced the number of interaction platforms within OCE’s portfolio - from 17 to 4 interface panels and interaction principles.
putting the user experience at the heart of our thinking
‘Making simple products is never easy. You have to have a deep understanding of your user’s challenges’ Professor J.M.P Geraedts, Director Océ Design
Today’s printing and copying product offers are becoming increasingly similar. Companies must find other ways to compete instead of merely reducing the cost price and improving the reliability. The creative challenge in this commission was to evolve and refine Océ’s interaction solutions, improve the user experience and enhance production & logistical requirements across Océ’s entire printing and copying portfolio.
A ‘C’ frame signature defines the identity across the range of interface panel solutions. The ‘C’ frame opens to one side for all the primary controls. The identity intelligently evolves Oce’s established design DNA, in this way the new interface panel readily fits to the existing and future portfolio.
near & far read diagnostics
An intelligent lighting strip communicates the product status from any position and at a distance away from the screen interface. Our aim was to support the user with relevant and reassuring product feedback thus reducing frustration and potential down time.
The design identity caters for a variety of interaction solutions across Océ’s printing and copying product portfolio: from touch screen interfaces; fingerprint recognition for security and personal data retrieval; to USB connectors for quick-start printing. In each solution we placed the user at the heart of our design thinking to define a reassuring interaction solution.
The Plotwave 300 wide format printer won an IF award in 2010 and was the first product launched incorporating this new interface.
Through considered design all unsightly construction details, cables and part-lines are removed. The interaction panel and pivoting arm has a robust and refined quality.
creative collaboration
The creative way of working was new for Océ in-house designers. GRO defined a creative process that initially focused on understanding the context of use - how different user groups (including disabled users) interact with each printing and copying system. To be effective and to learn from the experts, we collaborated throughout the commission with OCE’s in-house design team.
