GRO was invited to work with the Philips Design team to bring a broader perspective to the project and was responsible for the design of the entry level beard trimmer and hair dryer.
The overriding philosophy was to reduce details, materials and colours - to focus on the key features of each product.
entry level beard trimmer
Reducing visual clutter allows us to focus on what is important - the trimming head and comb adjustment detail.
The charging base integrates a cable winder and provides a platform for the product to proudly stand on, while other trimming heads are stored in a quality container.
The comb - usually an annoying accessory - has been seamlessly integrated with the body and is adjusted with a purposeful and decorative thumbwheel.
A high quality metal word-mark respects the brand across the range.
entry level hairdryer
The challenge with this design was to create an expressive, standing hair dryer with the minimum number of parts and details. The simplicity of the sculpted surfaces helps to suggest the smoothness of the airflow without over complicating the product.
The focus of this product is the explicit ‘freeze’ feature. It is indicated with an in-mold transparent snow flake. When activated it extends from the surface revealing an illuminated translucent ring clearly showing it is working.
The main focus of the project was to create design guidelines for the Philips Personal Care group. These example designs were a by-product of that exercise and were created to help illustrate opportunities and make recommendations more tangible.
